6 Eco-Friendly Gifts For Christmas

6 Eco-Friendly Gifts For Christmas

What is the meaning of Eco-friendly?  Eco-friendly means that the product is safe for the environment or safe for the earth. In this day in time when so many things are bad for the earth, people have become more aware of their surroundings. This Christmas season, here are some gifts for that Eco-environmentally friendly friend on your shopping list.

Solar Charger

Solar Charger is just that it uses the sun to charge your phone but it only works best in direct sunlight, so not good to use on cloudy or overcast days. It also takes the charger six to ten hours to fully charge the device. You can purchase solar chargers at Amazon Best Sellers: Best Cell Phone Solar Chargers or walmart.com.

Stainless Steel Cup

If you know someone who constantly has to have a drink in their hand, there are two cool gifts to consider the stainless steel reusable cup. There are several companies that sell these and over the past couple of years they have been selling like hotcakes. The biggest names on the market are Yeti, Rtic, and Ozark Trail, Walmart in-house brand. You can buy these on sites such as Amazon or Yeti, Rtic, and Walmart. Also for your drink lovers, they have eco-friendly straws for people who do not like to use plastic. You can find reusable stainless straws that are more durable than plastic, glass and bamboo straws.

Reusable Straws

Also for your drink lovers they have eco-friendly straws for people who do not like to use plastic. You can find reusable straws at Amazon.com. Reusable straws are more durable than glass, plastic, and bamboo straws.

Reusable Zip Lock Bags

For that person who can never seem to finish their food and needs to save leftovers, another cool gift idea would be the reusable zip lock bags. These bags are made to withstand extreme temperatures and are made of silicone, are clear so you can see what is inside and are dishwasher safe. Some of the best name brands would be Stasher, Re-Zip, and Nordic By Nature. You can also find these brands on Amazon.com.

Soy and Beeswax Candles

Another great gift idea for your Eco-friendly friends is Soy and Beeswax candles. Soy wax is easier to clean as it just takes soap and water to remove the wax. Soy wax is also biodegradable. Soy candles are also better than paraffin wax as they last longer and burn slower. Soy wax also has a lower melting point than paraffin.

LED Smart Lights

Lighting has changed a lot in the past 10 yrs.  We went from incandescent to compact fluorescent and now to LED.  LED is short for Light Emitting Diodes.  There are two main factors that make them eco-friendly. First, at a minimum, they use 75% less energy!  This also means they are much cheaper to use.  Secondly, they last 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. One of the coolest technology that is being used in led bulbs is that they can be turned on remotely and/or by voice!  I love turning on and off my lights via voice.  Philips Hue makes some of the best smart bulbs.

Recycling & Disposing of Batteries

Recycling & Disposing of Batteries

Simply put, a battery is a storage unit for electrical energy. With so many uses in the home, it's important to know which batteries can safely be thrown away in your household trash, and which batteries should be recycled or properly disposed of.

Single Use Batteries

Single use batteries are the most common batteries in your home. They can be found throughout your house in remotes, flashlight, toys, etc. These types of batteries have been deemed non-hazardous and can be thrown into your trash can, in all states, except California, where it is illegal to thrown away any type of battery in your household trash. Recycling single use batteries is an option, although it is not cost free.

Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable batteries are also quite common in households. They can be found in cameras, power tools, laptops, and most commonly, cell phones. These batteries contain hazardous materials and should be disposed of properly. There are a few different types of rechargeable batteries. Nickel metal hybrid and nickel cadmium batteries are found in electronics such as cameras, cordless phones and two-way radios. Lithium-ion batteries are found in portable devices such as cellular phones and lap tops. Small sealed lead acid batteries are less commonly found in the home, they are in items such as emergency exit signs, mobility scooters, and security systems. All of these batteries can, and should, be recycled. This can be done at no cost to you.

Car Batteries

Old car batteries, especially lead-acid batteries, contain a lot of toxic chemicals. If a battery is irresponsibly thrown away at a landfill and left to rot in the ground, it will contaminate the soil with lead, acids and non biodegradable plastics. Lead is a particularly harmful element, not only highly toxic but also very difficult to clean up, having lasting effects in the environment. If you are getting a new battery installed, most shops will take the old battery for you.  Sometime these locations will charge you a core charge on the new battery for the old one or if you bring them a old battery (without exchange) they will give you an in store credit.  If you are replacing the battery yourself, you will need to find a recycling facility who will accept the batteries. Most recycling facilities charge a small fee.

Why Is It Important?

Some batteries have potentially toxic metals in them. Ensuring that these metals do not end up in landfills prevent the toxic metals from leaking and polluting our water. Keeping our environment healthy, keeps us healthy!

Where Can I Recycle?

Most local and private transfer stations will accept batteries to be recycled, but they may charge a fee..  Also the big name hardware stores have drop off boxes.  Two websites to find a location near you are Call2Recycle and Energizer Batteries

What Is Labor Day?

Labor Day was created in the late 19th century by the labor movement and became a federal holiday in 1894.

At the height of the Industrial Revolution, the average United States citizen was working 12 hour days and seven day weeks in order to survive. Children as young as 5 had to work in mills, factories, and mine, despite restrictions. The children earned merely a fraction of what the adults would earn. The workers, particularly the very poor, faced extremely dangerous work situations, with no access to fresh air, clean facilities, and breaks. Around this time, in the late 18th century, labor unions grew more prominent and vocal. The began organizing rallies and would help workers form strikes to protest the poor conditions and the awful hours and pay workers would receive. Unfortunately, many of these events turned violent, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886, which cost several Chicago policemen their lives. On September 5th, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the very first Labor Day parade in United States History.

Today, many of us celebrate with a day of relaxation. Parades, parties, BBQs and more. However you celebrate, thank you for your hard work and enjoy your labor day!

How To Load a Level Dumpster

HOW TO LOAD A LEVEL DUMPSTER

  (HINT: It's not like that!)

WHAT IS A LEVEL LOAD?

It's pretty self explanatory. It's a load-that's level. Meaning there is nothing that goes over the top of a bin. Example, don't place a 8 ft tall basketball goal standing up in the dumpster!

WHY IS A LEVEL LOAD IMPORTANT?
1. SAFETY. When you are driving down the highway behind a truck with a full dumpster on it you do not want things flying off hitting your car! It could cause damage to cars but more importantly, it could cause wrecks.

Also, if anything flies out of the bin and onto the road, a car could run over the debris also causing wrecks.

2. LOW HANGING WIRES. If there are items over the top of a dumpster that has to drive under low hanging wires, it could cause damage and be dangerous.

LAW REGARDING LEVEL DUMPSTERS
Public Safety Commission, Hopper, GA. 404-559-6613.

Securing Loads on Vehicles No vehicle shall be driven or moved on any public road unless such vehicle is constructed or loaded or covered so as to prevent any of its load from dropping, escaping, or shifting in such a manner as to create a safety hazard; however, this code section shall not prohibit the necessary spreading of any substance in public road maintenance or construction operations. No person shall operate, or load for operation, on any public road any vehicle with any load unless said load and any covering thereon is securely fastened so as to prevent said covering or load from becoming loose, detached or in any manner becoming a hazard to other users of the public road. Nothing in this code section nor any regulations based thereon, shall conflict with federal, or Georgia Public Service Commission, or Georgia Board of Public Safety regulations applying to the securing of loads on motor vehicles. The provisions of subsection (b) of this Code section and regulations based thereon shall not apply to vehicles carrying silage from field to storage and storage to feedlot or vehicles or equipment carrying unginned cotton. 40-6-254 Transport of unsecured load; penalty No person shall operate any motor vehicle with a load on or in such vehicle unless the load on or in such vehicle is adequately secured to prevent the dropping or shifting of such load onto the roadway in such a manner as to create a safety hazard.? Any person who operates a vehicle in violation of this Code section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

In short, it's against the law to travel with a dumpster that has no tarp.

OUR EQUIPMENT
Bin There Dump That provides tarps! All you have to do is keep your load level and we handle the rest!

Landfills and transfer stations will not allow a truck with an uncovered bin to dump at their facility.

HOW DO WE ENSURE A LEVEL LOAD
When we come up pick up our dumpster, we inspect the contents, make sure the doors are able to close and securely locked and make sure it is a level load.

We look for anything above the rim of the bin. If possible, we adjust the debris to try and make it all fit without having to remove any items.
If the bin is considered unsafe to travel with, we must leave the bin so it can be offloaded.

HOW TO PREVENT GOING OVER THE RIM

Plan your load. Make sure you order the proper size dumpster.

Use the double doors to help place the large, bulky items on the bottom. Small items last, Organize the load. Do not load over the rim!

Workplace Distraction

Did you pay your electric bill? Did you put money on your kids lunch account? Did you turn off the hair straightener this morning? With a million things constantly running through our minds, it's easy to become distracted.

Most of our focus seems to fall on proactive things. But in some cases, it may be more beneficial to ask yourself what you should NOT be doing. As New York Times reported, a UC Irvine study found that a typical office worker gets interrupted every 11 minutes-yet it takes them an average of 25 minutes to get themselves back on their original task.  Continue reading to learn about the top 12 workplace distractions. And more importantly, how to eliminate them!

1.  NOISE
The problem: An open office works great for jobs that require a lot of communication, but not so much for a job that requires a lot of focus. In short, many different people having many different conversations. In a 2011 review from psychologist Matthew Davis found that an open office hurts creativity, attention spans and productivity.

The fix: Headphones. Headphones not only block out background noise, they let others know that you are deep in focused work and prefer not to be bothered. You don't even have to play music. Although, studies show that music (without lyrics) helps to increase your focus and productivity. If music isn't your thing, try a white noise app.

2. SMART PHONES
The problem: What a blessing. And a curse. Part of the reason we are so addicted to doing things such as checking our Facebook, Instagram and text messages is because it releases dopamine, the feel good chemical that makes us feel like we are completing tasks. The issue is that the pleasure dopamine provides is fleeting, which causes us to trigger those releases more often. We check our phones constantly, an easy way to flood our minds with dopamine.

The fix: Turn off your notifications. You can silence all notifications from social media and text messages to help you remain focused on the task at hand.

3. MULTITASKING
The problem: We all try to do it. Answer phone calls, taking notes, working on spread sheets. Maybe even ordering lunch. The thing is, our brains weren't made for multi tasking. When we attempt to multi task we distract ourselves.
The fix: Priorities, priorities, priorities. Accept that you have to focus on one task at a time then make a list in order of importance. Quality is better than quantity.

4. INTERRUPTIONS
The problem: Pretty self explanatory. You get interrupted. By someone wanting to spread some office gossip, ask what you brought for lunch, or ask basic questions.
The fix: Create a strong signal when they needs to be no interruptions. A sign, wear your headphones, or flags can be used as a sign to not disrupt.

5. CLUTTER
If your work space is cluttered, you already have things working against you. Your brain reacts to its surroundings. A cluttered space equals a cluttered mind.
The fix: Clean up! Minimal clutter results in minimal distraction. Take away the risk of your brain getting fixated on something other than the task at hand.

6. HUNGER
The problem: We all get hangry. So hungry that we get a little irritable. And when it comes to performance, you'd be hard pressed to find something more impactful than nutrition. Nutrition is extremely important for focus and cognition. You may not know that brain cells require twice the energy as the rest of the cells in our body! You may be quick to make a run to the vending machine or eat a candy bar you grabbed when you stopped for gas but after that sugary crash, you'll inhibit your ability for concentration, making the problem worse.

The fix: Avoid unhealthy fat and sugar filled snacks. Fill up with foods rich in protein, healthy fats, fiber and complex carbs to maintain your maximum focus.

7. ANXIETY
Roughly 18% of the population suffers from an anxiety disorder. Even before it becomes a full blown problem, anxiety is a factor in everyone's life. One side effect of anxiety is its effect on concentration. Moderate to severe anxiety can make concentration almost impossible.

The fix: Naps and mediation rooms are a great option, but not realistic for many. Small table top waterfalls are a great way to relax your mind. Forming positive work relationships can also help. Make sure you exercise, get enough sleep and eat healthy foods that are beneficial to the body.

8. ATTENTION SPAN
According to a study that made headlines worldwide, humans now have shorter attention spans than a goldfish, all in thanks to our smartphone addictions. Even before we had our smartphones, concentration has always been limited. Your focus and concentration are not infinite. Think of your concentration like a fuel tank, if you fill it up in the morning and spend the better part of your day driving around aimlessly, you run out of fuel.

The fix: Tackle your most important, highest leverage task first. Getting this out of the way creates relief and an early win for you, helping you to get through the rest of the day.

9. EMAIL
The problem: Checking your email throughout the day may not seem harmful but it is a surefire way to torpedo your productivity. Although we have been taught that responding the emails is a way of professionalism, constantly checking and following different threads distracts us from the task in front of us.

The fix: Designate time for email. Don't sporadically check your email throughout the day leaving yourself open for distraction. Designate a time, in the morning or evening to check and respond to all emails. Having a designated time helps focus on your other task throughout the day knowing that all emails will be responded to at a certain time everyday.

10. DECISION FATIGUE
The problem: Pretty self explanatory. When you have to many decisions to make, your brain gets tired. Just like our concentration fuel tank, the ability to make decisions can run out, too. As The New York Times Magazine described, "No matter how rational and high-minded you try to be, you can't make decision after decision without paying a biological price." The price? Irritability, inaction and lack of focus.

The fix: Routine. Develop a routine that you can stick to. When you already know what to wear in the mornings, that's one less decision you have to make. Have your lunch ready and things you need in their place. Save some decision making for the work day ahead.

11. MEETINGS
The problem: Talking about the work we should be doing instead of doing it.
The fix: Hold better, more productive meetings. Designate a leader. One who makes sure everyone stays on topic. Keep a strict time limit. Write everything down.

12. SOCIAL MEDIA
The big problem: Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and more. There are so many habit forming apps that we are all guilty of using. We have become addicted to these apps, and it effects our brains in a very similar way as opioids.
The fix: The best way to break a habit is to take away access to it. Put blockers on certain websites and apps during work hours taking the temptation for mindless scrolling away.
