What Is Labor Day?

Labor Day was created in the late 19th century by the labor movement and became a federal holiday in 1894.

At the height of the Industrial Revolution, the average United States citizen was working 12 hour days and seven day weeks in order to survive. Children as young as 5 had to work in mills, factories, and mine, despite restrictions. The children earned merely a fraction of what the adults would earn. The workers, particularly the very poor, faced extremely dangerous work situations, with no access to fresh air, clean facilities, and breaks. Around this time, in the late 18th century, labor unions grew more prominent and vocal. The began organizing rallies and would help workers form strikes to protest the poor conditions and the awful hours and pay workers would receive. Unfortunately, many of these events turned violent, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886, which cost several Chicago policemen their lives. On September 5th, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the very first Labor Day parade in United States History.

Today, many of us celebrate with a day of relaxation. Parades, parties, BBQs and more. However you celebrate, thank you for your hard work and enjoy your labor day!

Father's Day

In 1911, 1912 and 1915 three different attempts were made the establish Fathers Day as a holiday. They all failed. It wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B Johnson issued a proclamation honoring fathers, designating the 3rd Sunday in June as Father's Day. In 1972, Richard Nixon signed it into law and it was made a permanent holiday. A well-deserved holiday. 

With all the work mothers do and the praise they receive, sometimes the hard work that dads put in might get overlooked. Not today. 

Today take the time to thank your dad. For all the hard work. For all the long, exhausting days at work then coming home to be dad. To help with homework. To fix your bike. To chase you around the yard. To help mom with dinner. To tucking you in and reading you a bedtime story. Or to carrying us to our beds when we fall asleep on the couch. 

Thank you for all the behind-the-scenes work that we never notice as children. Paying bills, changing the oil, cutting the grass, spending 40 hours a week at a place you may not want to be.  Thank you for teaching us to appreciate and love. As much as I owe mom for molding me into who I am today, I owe you just the same.

Memorial Day

Initially observed in 1868, Memorial Day is a federal holiday remembering and honoring those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Once known as Decoration Day, this day originally honored only those lost while fighting the Civil War. During World War 1, the United states found itself in a major conflict, evolving the holiday to commemorate American military who have lost their lives in any war. 

 Memorial Day is considered the start of the summer season. Many cities across the United States host parades in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Some of the largest parades take place in Washington D.C., Chicago and New York. Many Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting and taking flowers to cemeteries and memorials. 

However you spend your day, take a minute to think about and thank every lost loved one that passed defending our country. We THANK YOU and your families!

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers. It was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday began in 1905, the year her mother passed away. She wanted to honor her mother and she believed a mother is the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world".



I want to say thank you, Mom. Thanks for making bottles and changing diapers. Thanks for kissing boo-boos and telling me bed time stories. Thanks for walks through the woods, building me a tree house and making me green eggs and ham in my Dr. Seuss phase. Thank you for keeping every handwritten, misspelled Mother's Day card I ever made you. Thank you for loving every pet worm I brought to you when I would dig in the yard. Thank you for back to school shopping and that Hilary Duff concert I just HAD to go to. Thank you for teaching me patience and acceptance. Thank you for teaching me how to be a good mother. Thank you for giving me what I needed to be a successful, happy adult. Thank you for loving me.

Anna Jarvis was correct, mothers do more for us than anyone in the world. A truly unconditional love.

China bans imports, what now?

CHINA BANS IMPORTS

Materials such as plastics, paper, and glass are usually set aside for recycling and shipped to overseas dumping grounds. However, last year China put a ban on the import of the items intended for reuse. So as citizens continue to sort their trash, what happens to the recyclable materials?

Since China has placed the ban last year, most of the materials that would usually go to those dumping grounds have been transported to Chester City, PA, where they use a Covanta incinerator to burn the materials. This new situation presents the risk of an increase of toxic pollution. Concerns for the health of the citizens of Chester City are growing, as experts say that burning plastic will create a new fog of dioxins that will worsen what is already an alarming health situation. Nearly 4 out of 10 children in Chester have asthma. The risk for ovarian cancer in Chester is 64% higher than the rest of the state and lung cancer risks are 24% higher. 

The debris is being shipped to Chester City from as far as New York City and North Carolina. The burning of this trash releases nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides, and particulate matter (tiny fragments of debris that when inhaled can cause an array of problems).

“There are higher than normal rates of heart disease, stroke, and asthma in Chester, which are all endpoints for poor air,” said Marilyn Howarth, a public health expert at the University of Pennsylvania.  She states that as it is difficult to link any single case of cancer, heart disease, or asthma directly to a source, the emissions from Covanta contain known carcinogens so they absolutely increase the risk of cancer. 

Covanta says that pollution controls, such as scrubbers in smokestacks, will prevent the toxins from being emitted. They also argue that burning the materials is a better option than simply letting in pile up in landfills.

The Environmental Protection Agency is trying to come out with solutions to the dilemma. It's proving to be difficult as our country generates more than 250 million tons of waste a year, until recently China would take about 40% of that.

Since the ban has been issued from China, they haven't accepted 2 dozen different recycling materials, such as plastic, and mixed papers-unless they meet strict rules around contamination. The imported recycling has to be clean and unmixed-a standard that is too difficult for most cities in the US. 

We can all agree that the entire recycling system in the US will need to be overhauled to avoid environmental damage.

What Is Littering?

WHAT IS LITTERING?

Littering is, in short, trash that has been disposed of improperly. It simply means throwing some debris on the ground or leaving it lying around at the wrong location. Litter can originate from several places such as construction debris, household, industries etc. Laziness also plays a part, when people don't want to take the time to find somewhere to dispose of their trash. 

Littering is DANGEROUS. All it takes is for some trash to end up on the road and it's an accident waiting to happen! If a small car runs over a large piece of debris or a car swerves to miss the trash on the road, it could cost someone their life!

TOILETS

CIGARETTES

This may be the most surprising! The waste from cigarettes can be re-purposed! The cigarettes and packaging are separated and melted down, turning into hard plastic pellets used for a variety of things!

TOOTHBRUSH

The standard toothbrush cannot be tossed into your recycling bin. It's made of hard plastic and nylon bristles. But in an effort to change the fate of many toothbrushes, Colgate and Sam's Club have both partnered with TerraCycle to recycle them.

OLD GREETING CARDS

It seems so wrong to throw them away but you can't keep adding to the drawer full of old cards, can you? Now, you can get rid of them and feel good about doing it! St. Jude's Ranch for Children accepts both new and used greeting cards of all occasions. They can recycle the cards to create new ones to sell. The money raised from the new cards will go towards abused and neglected homeless children.

PHONES, LAPTOPS, ELECTRONICS

There are several options for recycling e-waste. You can donate it to a school or non-profit if it still works properly. There are also electronics recyclers that take old devices to separate and then reuse the materials inside. Or you can also return the device to the manufacturer!

PRESCRIPTIONS

The safest way to recycle medications is through the drug store you received it from. Many pharmacies have mail-back programs at their stores where you can drop off your prescription drugs.

MAKE UP CONTAINERS

After you've gotten down to the last drop of your foundation, don't just toss the container into the trash. Many cosmetic companies offer a discount if you bring in your empty makeup containers.

SHAMPOO BOTTLES

Most shampoo, conditioner, and body wash containers can be recycled along with your plastic water bottles. Don't forget to rinse out the bottles before tossing into the recycling bin.

LIGHTS

When it's time for the Holidays you may be ready to start taking out your decor and lights. But there may be a few strands that have burned out, which you only discovered after untangling them all.

Instead of chucking them in the trash, there are programs that recycle them and pay you in return.

LIGHTLY USED BRAS

According to RedBook Magazine, the average woman owns 9 bras but only uses 6 of them. You can donate your lightly used bra to a local organization to distribute to women who can't afford them. 

COOKING OIL

As odd as it seems to recycle oil, the damage that oil can do to your plumbing makes it totally worth it! To start collecting oil for recycling simply designate a container for the used oil. You can take it to a local recycling center or even your fire department!

OLD GLASSES

You can give someone the gift of good vision! Several organizations will accept your old prescription glasses to help those with the same prescription as you to see better when they cannot afford their glasses!

ALUMINUM FOIL

If you clean your aluminum foil after using it you can take it to your local recycling center. Make sure it is not contaminated with food or oil.

A: Sometimes we can do same day delivery and almost always next day. As the old saying goes “the more the merrier”, the more days in advance we know the less problems you will have. What is allowed?

Renting a dumpster for medium to large home clean-outs and other projects is an excellent idea. We are very flexible about where we set our dumpsters, however we still must comply with city, county and state laws. If the driveway is large enough we can almost always place a dumpster on private driveways, and parking areas. Some cities or counties will allow dumpsters to be placed on a curb or in city streets either with or without a permit, however, there are some that do not allow dumpsters to be placed anywhere besides private property.

What is not allowed?  

Dunwoody does not allow dumpsters to be placed on any public property or right away without obtaining a dumpster placement permit first. This is to keep its citizens safe, when dumpsters are placed on streets they can become a hazard by creating blind spots.  Keeping dumpsters on private property also helps to prevent unlawful dumping. Though, unlawful dumping may not seem like an issue to the city it can become an issue to the person who has rented the dumpster. When there are restricted items in the dumpster the renter could be charged additional fees and may be forced to dispose of the item(s) separately.
