What is allowed?

Renting a dumpster for medium to large home clean-outs and other projects is an excellent idea. We are very flexible about where we set our dumpsters, however we still must comply with city, county and state laws. If the driveway is large enough we can almost always place a dumpster on private driveways, and parking areas. Some cities or counties will allow dumpsters to be placed on a curb or in city streets either with or without a permit, however, there are some that do not allow dumpsters to be placed anywhere besides private property.

What is not allowed? 

The City of Dallas does not have restrictions limiting residents to only be allowed to place a dumpster in their driveway. City of Dallas will allow a temporary rental dumpster to be placed in the street as long as it does not impede with the use of the street. Also, as a suggestion, it is always a good idea to look at the HOA for the neighborhood you live in to see if they have restrictions for items in the street and/or the driveway.

Can I put a refrigerator in the dumpster?

The short answer is no, it is illegal to dump them!  We cannot haul any items containing Freon. This includes the following items: refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, or air conditioning units. 

Most landfills and/or transfer stations will not accept these items because of the Freon used is hazardous.   If a Freon loaded item is found to be in a dumpster they (landfill/transfer station) will make us load up all the material and go somewhere else with everything! 

What if I drain the Freon & remove the compressor?

The answer is still no. Because the Freon is a hazardous chemical that releases ozone depleting refrigerants in the atmosphere. The removal and capture of the Freon must be done by a professional with a technician certificate. 

How can I recycle my old, working refrigerator?

Check with your local power provider.  Some power companies, like Georgia Power,  will come to you and even pay you to remove the unit!  See below for more info.

If your power company does not provide this service you can always check with your local transfer station or landfill (most counties have one).  The fees for Freon units can run from $10 to $80 per unit.  They will have a company come out (technician certification) and recapture the Freon for proper disposal and then either the same company or another will pick up the units to recycle (metal).

Georgia Power: Recycle Your Refrigerator Program

Georgia Power is offering a limited time Refrigerator Recycling Program. If you have a working unit that you need to be removed, they will pay you $35.00 and properly dispose the unit for you! The specifics are listed below. 

"Eligibility Requirements

In order for your refrigerator to be eligible for a pickup and rebate, it must be a secondary working unit. It cannot be the primary refrigerator for the residence. Reclaim, an appliance recycler, will pick up and recycle refrigerators and freezers that are empty and working. Refrigerators and freezers must be between 10 – 30 cubic feet in size and collection crews will need clear access to the unit. Contractor reserves the right to leave the appliance if removal may cause damage to the property or is otherwise impractical or unsafe. Customers must own the unit(s) being recycled. No purchase of new or replacement refrigerator or freezer units necessary for program participation. Limit two units per Georgia Power residential account per year.  Rebates are available to all Georgia Power residential customers. A check will be issued to the Georgia Power customer and will be mailed approximately 6-8 weeks after the appliance pickup. Rebates must be submitted, processed and received by the customer within one year from pickup date. Owner-occupied single family detached homes, condominiums and town homes are eligible to participate.

Offer valid on units scheduled to be picked up by December 15, 2019."

We have implemented a sanitizing process on every dumpster move.  We will be spraying down the door of every dumpster, every time we touch it.  Also, we are sanitizing the exterior doors (handles, too) when we leave a dumpster at a customer's location.  Our employees will periodically be cleaning and sanitizing their equipment, interior, and exterior of the trucks.

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time, also known as daylight time, is the practice of advancing clocks during warmer months so that darkness falls later each day according to the clock. The main use of daylight savings is to make better use of daylight. 

First introduced in April 1784, it was Benjamin Franklin who made the suggestion through his essay "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light". His suggestion was largely overlooked until 1907, when it resurfaced, this time by  Englishman William Willett. His proposal was rejected by the British House of Commons, until 1916 where it was introduced to Parliament, creating what was known then as, British summertime. 

The US only starting the tradition towards the end of World War 1 in an attempt to conserve energy. The House of Representatives voted 252 to 40 to pass a law to save daylight. The first official daylight saving time took place on March 15, 1918. Michael Downing, author of "Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time", met the new law with much resistance, a feeling he claims many others shared with him. 

Originally, clocks were sprung forward on the last Sunday in April and turned back on the last Sunday in October, but the Energy Policy Act of 2005 shifted the start of daylight saving time to the second Sunday in March and the end to the first Sunday in November.

When to avoid putting a dumpster on the lawn.

Things to consider, expect, and plan for when putting a dumpster on an unpaved surface. 

The best time to put a dumpster on the lawn or any unpaved is surface is when it is there are no other options. 99% of the time there will some type of evidence that a dumpster and/or a truck has been there.  

One common thing to consider is how will the dumpster get to where you want it?  Is there underground pipes, does getting there require driving over septic tank or lines, sprinklers systems, water lines, sewer lines, overhead power or cable lines, odd or uneven path,  or any other natural or man-made obstacle. Will access require driving off the edge of a driveway or other sensitive surfaces?  Going off and on the edge of concrete or blacktop increases the probability of damage and breaking of the surface.

There are some circumstances when placing a bin on a lawn is 100% a no go.  If there has been raining within the past 3-4 days or a long spell of rain. Also, consider this when the dumpster is scheduled to be picked up.  The ground is naturally wet or moist, uneven terrain, and slope. Driving over a septic tank & lines, sprinkler system, or any other fragile underground lines

The trucks, alone, are about 12,000 lbs and the dumpster empty is 2,000 lbs, for a total of 14,000 lbs! Tires will leave small ruts in the dry ground but will disappear after a couple of rainfalls.  The dumpster will damage grass and vegetation under it if it sits on the lawn for an extended period of time. From personal experience, I had a dumpster place on the side of my driveway for about 10 days and all the grass died leaving a nice brown spot.

We highly recommend avoiding put a dumpster on any unpaved surface unless it is a necessity.  It saves you a headache, time, and money!  If damage to the surface is your concern, let us put down our 100% driveway protection to prevent damage from the roller, rails, and rust marks!
